Joanna Italic
Part of Joanna Family (4 fonts)
Joanna™ Italic, created by the great British designer Eric Gill in 1930, was based on the types of baroque French punchcutter Robert Granjon. Named for Gill's daughter, Joanna Italic was cut for hand composition by the notable English Caslon foundry and used for Gill's 'Essay on Typography', which was printed by Hague & Gill in 1931. (Gill had formed the printing concern to give his unemployed son-in-law something to do!) The Monotype Type Drawing Office added semi bold, bold and extra bold weights in 1986. Joanna Italic, Gill said, is a book face free from all fancy business. The typeface is a light, unusual design with tiny serifs and narrow, nearly vertical italics. Although intended as a book face, Joanna has become a favorite for display and advertising typography. Character Set: Latin-1
