Monotype Franklin Gothic Extra Condensed originates from a family of sans serif faces issued by American Type Founders early in the twentieth century. Franklin Gothic was made in response to types being sold in the USA under the name Standard, and cut by the Berthold foundry at the end of the nineteenth century. Franklin Gothic quickly became popular and is still widely used in newspapers and advertising for headlines and display.
