Technotyp Bold Italic was designed by Coen Hofmann (Herbert Thannhaeuser). The digital type face Technotyp originates from the hot metal face designed by the German typographer Herbert Thannhaeuser (1898-1963) for the East German type foundry Typoart in Dresden. In his book Der Schriftsetzer (Fachbuchverlag, Leipzig, 1952), ist author Paul Fritzsche showed the then recently marketed face in all its variations. Fritzsche remarked that the 'Werkschrift' of the Technotyp (comparable with our 'Regular') seemed to be, because of its rather condensed form and its relatively long ascenders, very well szited to serve as a text face, but that for this purpose the face should be cut for the composing machine. However, this never happened. the whole Technotyp family has been available for hand composition only. Now, however, this digital version of a charming type family, with its distinct flavour of the 1950s, is added to the faces designed by Herbert Thannhaeuser, which is available from URW++, a.o. Garamond No. 4 and Magna. The original Typoart family only had an italic for the Light version. In this digital rendition, als the Regular, Medium and Bold styles were enhanced with an italic. To increase the usefulness of the digital Technotyp family, also Cyrillic faces were added. Of course, also the characters for the sundry West- and East-European languages complete the sets.
