The Avenir is French for “future,” and the Avenir font is influenced by early geomeric sans-serif typefaces like Erbar (1926) designed by Jakob Erbar, and Futura (1927) designed by Paul Renner. The Avenir font is available in six font weights.

Adrian Frutiger intended the Avenir font to be a more organic, humanist interpretation of these highly geometric types. While similarities can be seen with Futura, the two-story lowercase a is more like Erbar, and also recalls Frutiger’s earlier namesake typeface Frutiger.

The Avenir font was immediately successful in print publishing. An improvement of hinting in Avenir Next has made for improved on-screen display, even in smaller point sizes.

The success of the Avenir font can be seen in:
The city of Amsterdam, BBC Two, Dallas/Fort Worth International, Key Bank, Red Lion Hotel Corporation, Philadelphia based SIG (Susquehanna International Group, Japan Airlines, and Wake Forest University.

In an interview, Adrian Frutiger’s words about the Avenir font:  “These have constructed characters from which the element of a handwriting movement has been removed,”, adding that: “Avenir is intended to be nothing more or less than a clear and clean representation of modern typographical trends, giving the designer a typeface which is strictly modern and at the same time human, that is suitably refined and elegant for use in texts of any length.”
