The Droid fonts family was designed by Ascender’s Steve Matteson beginning in the fall of 2006. The objective was to provide optimal quality, legibility and reading comfort on a mobile handset. The Droid family of fonts were optimized for use in application menus, web browsers and for other screen text. Ascender Corporation worked closely with Google and the Open Handset Alliance to develop these system fonts for Android, a free, open source, and fully customizable mobile platform. The new Droid font family collection provides an extensive set of styles, weights and language support. The Droid fonts each were custom designed by Ascender and optimized for on-screen legibility with the Android platform. The Droid fonts each contain an extensive character set with coverage including Western Europe, Eastern/Central Europe, Baltic, Cyrillic, Greek and Turkish. Ascender continues to develop and enhance the Droid font family collection and is working with OHA members to customize the Droid font family for the Android platform. |
