Adrian Frutiger was commissioned in 1968 by the Charles De Gaulle International Airport to develop a sign and directional system. It was thought that he would want to use his successful Univers font family for this project, however, Frutiger decided instead to make a new sans serif typeface that would be suitable for the specific legibility requirements of airport signage.
The new Frutiger fonts, which bears the designer's own name and was originally called Roissy, was completed in 1975 and installed at that airport the same year. In 1976, he expanded and completed the Frutiger font family for the D. Stempel AG typefoundry in conjunction with Linotype.
Frutiger's goal for the Frutiger font family was to create a sans serif typeface with the rationality and cleanliness of Univers, but with the organic and proportional aspects of Gill Sans. The result is that the Frutiger font is a distinctive and legible typeface.
Reader-friendliness, legibility and the efficient conveyance of content have always been his passionate goals. Adrian Frutiger designed many popular typefaces including Univers, Avenir, Apollo, Egyptienne, Ondine and of course, the Frutiger font family.
The Frutiger font family is neither strictly geometric nor humanistic in construction and is suited to have a modern appearance and legibility at various angles, sizes, and distances. Ascenders and descenders are very prominent, and apertures are wide to easily distinguish letters from each other.
The simplistic and reader-friendly, yet warm and casual characters have made the Frutiger fonts very popular in advertising, corporate branding, packaging, newsletters and other design projects.
Adrian Frutiger has received many awards for his achievements and contributions to type and typography. He received the Gutenberg prize in 1986 and twenty years later he was honored with the Typography Award from The Society for Typographic Aficionados (SoTA).
