Futura™ Fonts from Ascender
The Futura font family is a sans serif typeface designed between 1924 and 1926 by Paul Renner. The futura fonts are based on geometric shapes that became representations of the Bauhas style of font design of 1919-1933. Futura originally became available for commercial release in 1927.
The Futura font family was first designed in the weights of Light, Medium, Bold, and Bold Oblique in 1928, then it was later released in Light Oblique, Medium Oblique, Demibold, and Demibold Oblique in 1930.
Futura has a presentation of productivity and impertinence. The Futura font originated from simple geometric forms, such as circles, triangles and squares and is based on strokes of almost even weight, which are low in differentiation.
When creating the Futura font family, Paul Renner avoided the ornamental and decorative, eliminating insignificant elements. The original Futura font design also included small capitals and the old style figures, which were removed from the original meta issue of this typeface.
The Futura fonts influenced the creation of many other typefaces, such as Twentieth Century, Century Gothic, Erbar, Braggadocio and many others. Adrian Frutiger recognizes Futura as one of his inspirations for his Avenir font which he designed in 1988.
