Garamond Font Family is closely related to the roman typefaces cut by Jean Jannon in 1615. Jannon designs were influenced by the groupo of old style serif typefaces named after the punch cutter Claude Garamond (c. 1480-1561) which had been cut in the previous century.
Garamond Font Family's types were, in turn, based on those used by Aldus Manutius in 1495 and cut by Francesco Griffo. The italic is based on types cut in France circa 1557 by Robert Granjon. This version of Garamond Font Family was introduced in 1922 for hot metal typecasters.
A direct relationship between Garamond’s letterforms and contemporary type can be found in the Roman versions of the typefaces Sabon, Granjon, Stempel Garamond, and Adobe Garamond.
Garamond fonts convey a sense of fluidity and consistency. Some unique characteristics in the letters are the small bowl of the a and the small eye of the e. Long extenders and top serifs have a downward slope.
The Garamond font is a beautiful typeface with an air of informality which looks good in a wide range of applications. Garamond font works particularly well in books and lengthy text settings.
The popularity of the Garamond fonts have been used in Dr. Seuss books, the user skin and body text of Wikipedia, all of the American editions of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, and the branding & marketing of Apple and Macintosh.
