Interstate fonts were originally designed by Tobias Frere-Jones in 1993-94. Interstate fonts consist of a large sans serif family with extraordinary readability and are based on interstate signage fonts of the United States Federal Highway Administration. Interstate fonts are commonly seen and familiar to drivers from all over the United States.

Drivers may be familiar with Interstate fonts from its look that is based on US Highway signage of the United States Federal Highway. The letterforms are read or glanced at from almost everywhere we drive. The Interstate font is a large sans serif family with extraordinary readability.

Created by Tobias Frere-Jones, the Interstate font family has grown since its introduction in 1993. With the assistance of Cyrus Highsmith, Interstate has been expanded into a versatile range of text and display designs that now includes 40 fonts.

Interstate fonts are offered in compressed, condensed and regular widths and weights that range from hairline to ultra black. Also available is a series of pi fonts featuring symbols inspired by traffic signs.

Interstate fonts are clean, simple, easy on the eyes, and provide a real advantage in quick communication. The Interstate typeface lends itself particularly well for not only signage, but for newspaper, magazine and online use as well.
