The Zapfino font is a calligraphic script typeface designed for Linotype by the prominent type designer, Hermann Zapf in 1998 as a Type 1 font. Zapfino is based on an alphabet Zapf originally penned in 1944. As a font, Zapfino makes comprehensive use of ligatures and character variations. Zapf worked with Linotype to create four alphabets and various ornaments, flourishes, and other dingbats.
Zapfino’s ample and beautiful swash and alternate characters also help to make each word set in it appear unique and handwritten.
The Zapfino font is a perfect example of what the OpenType font format has to offer the designer. Hermann Zapf’s passion with the hand-rendered forms of calligraphy has now found perfection with digital technology.
By using OpenType, Hermann Zapf has managed to take the Zapfino font beyond a digital script font into the realm of electronic calligraphy, normally only achievable by very skilled hands.
Zapfino is a trademark of Linotype GmbH and may be registered in certain jurisdictions.
